Over one month has passed since the last newsletter. Stepping back from writing the newsletter weekly and participating in online chess discussions on twitter and Bluesky has had an unexpected effect.
In the last 4 years, I have written +300 newsletters and published 19 chess books. It has been a very intense and productive period, but it is also becoming harder to keep pushing every week. Something I have been reflecting on lately.
Last week, I attempted to identify and organize checkmate patterns by applying a clustering algorithm, focusing specifically on the 3×3 squares surrounding the checkmated king.
Some days ago, I read in a blog post on Lichess that the kill box checkmate pattern had been added as a puzzle keyword. This made me wonder how many checkmate patterns are without a specific name and “undiscovered”.
