Last week, I submitted a blog to PsychologyToday. It was not about fear of flying. It was unlike anything I written before. I expected the editor would reject it. To my surprise, she found it fascinating and asked me to add to it.
Now we know what happened to the UPS MD-11. The left engine detached from the pylon that mounts the engine to the bottom of the wing. A similar engine detachment caused the crash of an American Airlines DC-10 in Chicago back in 1979.
When cruising in turbulence, the plane moves up and down. Since there are as many up movements as down movements, they tend to cancel each other out. If they do not cancel each other out completely, the autopilot makes an adjustment.
