Glistening snow.
And blood.

She’d thought of him longingly,
over so many years,
though imagining lately,
it only brought tears....
Waking Up
Note: this piece is based on the time period 2017-2018. I wake very differently, these days.
Awake, not with a jolt,
just a faint realization that I’m still breathing.
Still alive.
I wonder about the day I maybe won’t wake.

Swimming against fiery tide,
waves of flame burn
and strip skin as she goes.
Deep breaths.
Keep the motion going.
Legs kicking, even though
flesh is blackening.
Is that bone beneath, that she sees?
