近日,我到印尼日惹(Yogyakarta)的加查馬達大學(Universitas Gadjah Mada,UGM)開會,跟亞洲各地的人文社科學者交流學習。
出發前看資料,我才知道日惹是印尼的一個特區(Special Region of Yogyakarta),也是印尼擁有最密集大學的文化藝術之都。在街上,我看到很多衣著打扮極西化的大學生,也有很多包頭巾的女性在電單車上奔馳。
香港也是特區,也是高等教育中心。我想,香港人跟日惹人聊天,或許可以得到一些啟發。

中大公共人文學課程搞了一個活動,叫University and the Public: Staying with Our Common Concerns(大學與公眾:與我們的共同關切同在),有幸邀得著名的項飆教授(曾為牛津大學教授,現為德國馬克斯.普朗克社會人類學研究所所長)短留一天,跟中大同事和同學交流。

德國思想家哈伯馬斯(Jürgen Habermas)去世後,我想起了文化社會學家谷淑美。
哈氏有一個著名的概念——「公共領域」(public sphere)。歷史上,西歐曾經出現過一些咖啡館和沙龍,推動了歷史的發展;但後來因為體制力量的介入與媒體消費主義等因素,這些空間所孕育的溝通與批判精神逐漸萎縮。

入場前,本以為賀歲片《金多寶》會像80年代港產片《富貴逼人》般,講天降橫財。但看戲時,我首先想起的卻是2003年的德國電影《再見列寧!》(Goodbye, Lenin!)。
《再見列寧!》講述一個兒子努力欺瞞母親,源於她在東德時代昏迷,卻在西德時代醒來,醫生說如果她發現東德已被吞併,會受不住刺激,所以兒子努力重塑家居佈置,去構築一個「東德」的幻覺給母親。《金多寶》亦類似,都是兒女以謊言來表達對長輩的愛,而同樣地,兩套電影的長輩都不是被欺瞞的老糊塗,知道真相卻沒拆穿。

最近,跟長沙灣咖啡室 Thirsty 的咖啡師阿立聊天,談起不少人說文科無用。
「文科無用,但有趣。中學生在作選擇的時候,也早已思考過,做了心理準備吧?」
阿立的話提醒了我兩點:一,與其局限於討論某事物有用還是無用,又或有甚麼「無用之用」,不如索性跳出「用」這概念,轉而去思考它帶來的「趣」;二,除了泛泛而論某些知識有何實用價值,不如轉向現象本身——選讀文科,其實是某群年輕人的嚴肅選擇,在思考了自己的性格和未來後,把「趣」置於「用」之上去度過幾年人生。
