理玄の日記 -型のない席-
茶の間に、見慣れない小ぶりの急須が置いてあった。
椿姉さんがもらってきた茶葉と、ついでに借りてきたものらしい。
「煎茶っていうのよ。湯を少し冷ましてから注ぐの」
姉さんの手つきは、僕が稽古で習う作法とはまるで違う。
茶筅で泡を立てずに、葉をひらかせて、出てきたものをそのまま飲むんだ。
一口もらったら、思っていたより甘くて驚いた。
聞けばこの飲み方は、武家の作法とは別のところで広まったらしい。
茶を飲みながら詩を詠み、絵を見せ合い、字を書く。

縁側に、和歌を書き付けた札──歌留多の札がずらりと伏せて干してあった。
椿姉さんが一枚ずつ表に返しては、指の先で縁をなぞっている。
「湿気を吸うと、札が反ってしまうのよ」
隣にしゃがんで崩し字を目で追っていたら、昨日表具屋で見た一幅を思い出した。
右へ左へ大きくかしいだ、癖の強い字。
誰の手なのか聞きそびれたままだった。
指で宙にその形を描くと、姉さんはあっさり言った。
「ああ、それなら定家様じゃないかしら。この歌留多の歌を選んだ人よ」

今日は夏月姉さんに頼まれた軸を受け取りに、羽留名町の橋のたもとの表具屋へ行った。
表具屋のおじさんは仕上がった軸を、ゆっくり広げて見せてくれた。
いつもの父さんの字だ。……あれ。
家の稽古場で見ていたときより、黒がずっと深い。
「これ、父さんが書き直したんですか」
「いいや。預かったままだし、取り換えたりもしとらんよ」
「そうですか。黒が濃くなった気がしたので、墨を濃くすったか、書き直したかのどちらかだと思っていました」

理玄の日記 - 玄に込めた思い -
昨日の幕の黒が頭に残っていたから、今朝は父さんに名前のことを聞いてみた。
「お前の名前に玄を入れた意味か。
それはな、『玄』とは、底が見えぬほど深く、理屈で言い尽くせぬことを指す字だ。
お前にも、そういうものを掴める人間になってほしいと思うてつけたのだ」
稽古の直しばかり言う父さんから、こんな言葉が出るとは思わなかった。
うまく返せなくて、「……うん」とだけ答えた。
昼が過ぎた頃、文机の紙の風車がひとりでに回りはじめた。
これは僕の式神だ。

今日は父さんが書いた守り札を届けに、朝のうちに社へ上がった。
境内では秋祭りの支度で、神主さんと男衆が軒から軒へ長い幕を張り渡していた。
「理玄さん、そっちの端を持っていておくれ」
受け取った幕は、思ったより重い。
広げると、幅の広い布が五つ縫い合わせてある。
青、黄、赤、白、黒。
黒だけが、朝の日を吸い込むみたいに沈んで見えた。
並びに決まりはあるのか、神主さんに聞いてみた。
「それは五色（ごしき）というんだよ。
