Unavoidable, invited.
Rough clay frame, one small round eye of glass,
not smooth, sometimes hidden in the hallway’s shadows.
She hung it in the hallway,
not the bathroom, not the closet,
a place everyone walked through...

I sit here writing this with a fan running, one of those noisy box fans, blowing straight at me. White noise, the kind that’s supposed to carry you off to sleep, or into that empty, quiet space the Zen folks call no mind.
