Sea Cow

Mary Beth Rew Hicks

Sea cows belong to the Sirenians, named for the mythological seabird-women who bewitched sailors with song. I’m drawn to sirens, selkies, and the goddess Io who swam the seas in the form of a cow. Most of my writing is about women, whales, and cows.

Kiwi lemonade

I suck at the transition from summer to not-summer. I am getting better at tackling it, enduring it, riding it out, but it’s not my time. Not here with a 14-foot skeleton (I think they’re cool, don’t get me wrong), or a pumpkin spice latte,...

Swallowtail Vigil

She started taking mid-afternoon telework breaks during the summer of 2020 and planting herself beside the butterfly bush in her backyard in Toledo, Oregon. By 2:30, she reached capacity on faces-in-boxes meetings, spreadsheets, regression ...
