Some research suggests that increasing the stretch you achieve with each repetition can lead to more muscle growth. (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII)
If you have a stubborn or lagging muscle that doesn’t seem to grow as well as others, I think it makes sense to try upping the number of sets you’re doing for that muscle group per week.
Though I think some exercises are generally better or worse than others for most people, I think that the difference in results from an optimal exercise and a pretty good exercise for a given muscle is probably small.
If you have time to spare, I think that completing a set or two of an isolation exercise that targets a mobility weakness for a given compound exercise can be useful prior to completing your sets of that compound exercise.
