目を覚まし、高台から島を見渡すと、東の村が燃えていた。
女は走った。
途中に生えていたクバの木を引き抜き、投げながら走ったという。
その女の名は、サンアイイソバ。
十五世紀末ごろの与那国島を治めたと伝えられる、女の長である。
ただし、これは同時代の文書に記された戦記ではない。
与那国島で語り継がれてきた伝承である。
前の記事では、琉球王府の制度の中で、宮古・八重山の人々が「頭」として数えられていった人頭税の歴史を辿った。

与那国島の一族から、こんな話を聞いたことがある。
自分たちの祖先は船乗りで、人頭税を首里まで運んでいた。
これは、一族に残る口伝である。
今のところ、特定の家と人頭税の運搬を直接結びつける文書を、自分が確認できたわけではない。
だから、歴史的な事実として断定することはできないが、それでも「人頭税を運んでいた」という言葉は、自分の中に残り続けた。
税を運ぶとは、どういうことなのだろう。
現代の税金なら、数字やお金を思い浮かべる。

斎場御嶽で、聞得大君の衣装をまとったガイドに案内され、神具を使って祈りを体験する。

2026年9月29日、沖縄タイムスが報じたこの観光構想を読んで愕然とした。
企画を検討しているのは「DMOなんじょう」。
普段は立ち入りが制限されている区域への早朝参拝を含み、想定客単価は一人10万円以上だという。

普通に考えれば、そうなる。
沖縄のグスク(城)にも、高い石垣がある。
狭く曲がった道があり、見張りのための場所があり、実際に戦いも起きている。
グスクの軍事的な役割を、無かったことにはできない。
けれど、グスクに立つたび、自分は別のものが気になっていた。
城壁の内側や、そのすぐそばに、御嶽や拝所がある。
王は城を出るとき、まず祈った。
城としての役割を終えたあとも、祭祀の場所として残ったグスクがある。

本当に神聖な場所には、何もない
「神聖な場所」と聞いて、多くの人が思い浮かべるのは、大きな鳥居や立派な社殿、神の名を記した額や由緒を伝える案内板ではないだろうか。
目に見える何かがそこにあることで、私たちはその場所が神聖なのだと理解する。
けれど、沖縄の御嶽には、鳥居も社殿もない場所がある。
あるのは森や岩や洞穴や泉。
ときには香炉がひとつ置かれているだけだったりもする。
初めて訪れた人には、ただ木々が生い茂る場所にしか見えないだろう。
