夢を見るのは、眠っている時だけなのだろうか。
自分は御嶽へ入る時に起こる感覚を、人にこう説明することがある。
「起きながらにして見る夢」だと。
御嶽へ入ったからといって、目の前の景色が消え、別の世界が見えるわけではない。

六十年に一度巡ってくる、火の性質が重なるとされる年だ。

香炉の中に残る灰を見ていると思うことがある。
線香は燃え尽き、火は消え、煙もやがて見えなくなる。
けれど、灰だけはそこに残る。
灰は、一般には何かが燃えたあとの残りもの、役目を終えて捨てられていくものとして扱われる。
しかし祈りの中にある灰は、本当にただの燃えかすなのだろうか。
一本の線香を立てるたびに、そこには誰かの願いがあった。
家族の無事を願った日もあれば、亡くなった人へ言葉を届けた日もあっただろう。
声に出すことのできない思いを、静かに手の内へ収めた日も...
