道の突き当たりに、なぜ石があるのか
沖縄の住宅街を歩いていると、家の塀や道の突き当たりに、「石敢當」と書かれた石をよく見かける。古い自然石に文字が刻まれたものもあれば、コンクリートの壁にはめ込まれたもの、陶器の表札のようなものもある。
那覇で育った自分にとって、石敢當は誰かに意味を教わるものではなかった。
気づけば、いつも街のどこかにあり、あまりにも風景に溶け込んでいるから、「なぜ、ここに石が置かれているのだろう」と考えることもなかった。
けれど沖縄を離れて暮らしてみると、あの三文字が街角にある風景そのも...
あの世のお金、ウチカビの話
沖縄の旧盆には、ウークイと呼ばれる、祖先を見送る夜がある。
旧暦七月十三日から十五日までの三日間、初日のウンケーで祖先を家へ迎え、真ん中のナカヌヒーを家族や親戚とともに過ごし、最終日のウークイで、再びグソーへ送り出す。「御送り」という意味だ。
そのウークイの夜、祖先を見送るために燃やされるものが、ウチカビである。
黄土色の紙に銭の形が打ちつけられた紙銭で、「あの世のお金」と呼ばれている。祖先がグソーでお金に困らないように。
いわば、この世の家族からあの世で暮らす家族へ...
方言札、言葉を奪うということ
方言札
「方言札」というものを知っているだろうか。
学校で、その土地の言葉を話した子どもに渡された、小さな札である。
首から掛けさせられることもあれば、立たされたり、掃除を命じられたり、成績を下げられたりすることもあった。
罰の形は学校や地域によって違っていて、次にしまくとぅば(島の方言)を話す子を見つけるまで、札を持たされ続けたという話も残っている。
そのため子どもたちは、自分の言葉を抑えるだけでなく、誰かがしまくとぅばを話さないか、互いを監視するよ...
姉妹は、なぜ兄弟にティーサージ(手ぬぐい)を持たせたのか
かつて琉球では、兄弟が漁や航海、遠い旅へ出るとき、姉妹が一枚の布を持たせる習わしがあった。
ティーサージと呼ばれる手ぬぐいである。
姉妹は、兄弟が無事に帰ってくることを願い、ティーサージをお守りとして渡した。
ときには、姉妹の髪の毛を守り袋に入れて持たせることもあったという。
なぜ、姉妹だったのだろうか。
沖縄では、姉妹には兄弟を守る力があると考えられてきた。
兄弟から見た姉妹を「おなり」または「うない」と呼び、姉妹から見た兄弟を「えけり」と呼ぶ。
