现代民主国家都是相似的，而专制政体则各有各的独裁，不同类型的专制政体的寿命、运作模式、向民主转型的可能性差异极大——政治学家们花了很长时间才逐渐认识到这一点。
1970 年代至今，政治学对专制政体的比较研究日渐加深，两个流行的分类模型得以形成：Linz 分类和 Geddes 分类。
