ここで私は、重要な選択を迫られる。
さっきすれ違った作業員は、はたしてどのスリッパを履いていたのか。
私には、すごく重要なことだ。
なぜなら、私は人の体温を感じるのが無性に苦手だからだ。
心温まる話は好きだ。
でも、人のぬくもりに直接触れるのは昔から苦手なのである。
私だけだろうか。
うまく表現できないが、その人の何かが私に溶け込んでくるというか、その人の一...

息子から返ってきた、答えに困る質問
「なんでこんなに計算する必要があるの？」
息子が小学3年生の頃、宿題を前にしてそう聞いてきました。
確かに。
一瞬、言葉に詰まりました。
私も、うまく答えられなかったのです。
「大人になったら使うから。」
「勉強だから。」
そんな答えでは、きっと息子は納得しません。
だったら、
説明するより、体験した方が早いかもしれない。
そう考えました。
計算が自然と必要になる場面を、生活の中に作ってみよう。
思いついた場...
手芸店で買ったゴムひもが、息子の空手を変えた話
「近い！」
「今度は遠すぎる！」
道場で、先生の声が何度も飛びます。
息子は空手を習っています。
空手には、相手と実際に戦ってポイントを取り合う「組手」と、決められた動きを行う「型」があります。
息子が取り組んでいるのは主に組手です。
組手では、相手との距離、「間合い」がとても大切になります。
近すぎれば相手の攻撃を受けやすくなり、遠すぎれば自分の攻撃が届きません。
先生は何度も、
「近い！相手の攻撃もらうぞ！」
「その距離じゃ届かない！」
と声を掛けて...

仕事を終えて家で一息つき、ビールを開けた瞬間、私の携帯が鳴った。

嫌な予感がした。
私は知っている。
こんな時間にわんわんするときは、大体ろくでもないことが多い。
「はい、ピートンです。」
電話に出ると上司だった。
「警察から連絡があって、実習生のホアンが万引きで捕まった。」
……はい、ビンゴ。
予感は見事に当たった。
