缘起性空这一概念可以说是佛法最根本的一个哲学观。佛学将所有的法分为两大类：一类是有为法，我们人类现今认识的一切现象，都是有为法，它依赖一定的条件而存在，是生灭无常的；另一类是无为法，与有为法相反，它不依赖任何条件而存在，因此也是不生不灭、永恒常在的，这可以说只是哲学上的一个概念，而不存在于我们的现实世界。缘起性空主要是针对有为法而言的，因为我们能认识能讨论的对象只是有为法，而有为法最根本的性质就是缘起。
