移住してきて、一番つらかったことは何か。
それは、「小学校の先生」である自分で、なくなってしまったことでした。
大学を卒業してから、11年間。
僕は小学校の教室で、
ずっと「先生」をしてきました。
口では
「先生って呼ばなくていいよ」
なんて言っていたんです。
でも、
いざ本当に「先生」と呼ばれなくなってみて、
初めて気がついたことがありました。...

今朝、目が覚めると、
からだがバキバキに痛みました。
昨日の
田植えの疲労です。
まるで
長いレースの後のような重たさでした。
僕は、
新型コロナウイルスが流行する前まで、
トライアスロンに取り組んでいました。
レースはだいたい、日曜日。
だから月曜日の朝は、
いつもからだがバラバラになりそうで、
仕事に行くのが億劫でたまらなかった。
でも、
それと同時に。
なんだか、
レースをくぐり抜けた自分が誇らしくて。
少しだけ、
胸を張れるような朝...
エレベーターの「閉まる」ボタンを、意味もなく連打していたあの頃。
やれることは、すべてやりました。
いま、僕にできることは、もう何もありません。
ただ、じっと待つこと。
それだけです。
カレンダーを見返すと、
3月30日から、今年の田んぼの作業が始まっていました。
山の中にある田んぼなので、
水はすべて、山からの湧き水です。
あれから1ヵ月半もの間。
水源地を掃除しに行ったり。
土を耕したり。
草を刈って、どろで畦（あぜ）を塗ったり。
新しく譲り受けた田んぼです。
不慣れなことも多かったけれど。
いま自分にできる...
一緒に泥だらけになってくれる仲間はいる？
すこし前、地域の文旦（ぶんたん）農家さんに、
聞いたことがあります。
「なんで、文旦を選んだんですか？」
って。
僕が住む地域は、文旦（ぶんたん）が有名です。
でも、誰もが気軽に手を出せる果物じゃない。
そう思って、ふしぎになったんです。
すると、農家さんはふんわりと笑いました。
そして、こう答えてくれたんです。
「文旦が、私を選んだんだよ」
僕はずっと
その言葉の意味を考えていました。
作物に、心があるのだろうか。
何かに呼んでもらったよう...
